What an interesting life this man had and such a well compiled set of memories.
Korff allows for the whole experience, telling of his early days in a detailed, yet never boring way which introduces a reader to the main character in this life story and grows with him.
The description of Parabat selection is superb, giving a real sense of just how tough the selection course was, what it meant to pass and similarly how Korff dealt with failure in special forces selection The active service section takes up the majority of the book, detailing campaigns from the late 70 s and early 80 s in Namibia and Angola The combat described is fluid and sharp, as it probably was fighting in the African bush, with short and sharp engagements beginning and ending quickly You get a real sense of what it was like as a townie facing his first campaign out in the Bush, especially in An excellent book and a righteous real life adventure read Serving in the SADF on the SWA Angolan border was an interesting experience for all concerned and left it s mark on many South African males of my generation There were lots of good memories as well and Granger captures the spirit of the times wonderfully I live in the UK now so it is good to recall that old SA army slang, ambience, comradeship and raucous attitude from way back I d forgotten about this book but was looking through my bookshelf and browsing through it decided to read it again It s that good, a great recollection of the life and times of a troopie in the SADF.
I grew up in South Africa during this time in our lands history I remember it soo well seeing it on the television everyweek about our soldiers efforts deep into Angolan territory This war was a secret kept from the world, of our situation in Angola until the financial backing of the United States of America dissapeared This book gives us a look behind a ordinary soldiers life on the front in Angola and once, one has finished reading this book on thinks what a hell of a fight he went threw not only on the battlefield but also in his personal life What a book A Great book Personal accounts like this one are extremely valuable to whoever wants to know what it is like being in a fight, fighting a war.
Uncomplicated straight forward reading, It will make you laugh and make you feel you like are there.
These were real men.
