What a wonderful book I have recently become interested in history and when I saw what good reviews this book got, I knew I had to check it out Between Shades of Gray is a story about family, suffering, survival, hope, evil, and friendship While this book was hard to read, Lina is an incredibly strong, likeable heroine and her mother, Elena, was the voice of optimism, hope, and kindness This book gives a deep, powerful voice to the history of Lithuania during the take over by the Soviet Union I highly, highly recommend this book It is a relatively quick read, and it includes discussion questions and an interview with the author at the end, as well as a little historical background.
I can easily give this book 5 5 stars, which I do not do often.
This is a great book The characters are interesting and it is cool that the story is based on real events A definite must read, especially since there are many people that are unaware of this history The only negative for the product itself was that some of the corners of the back pages were a little torn up However, I am not sure if this happened during shipping or if the product was originally in that state Other than that, I would definetely recommend this book to others.
Didn t know if I would like this story I m of a mystery or thriller type of reader but I just LOVE this story Heart wrenching, poignant and beautifully written I have never read a book so quickly Couldn t put it down This book was amazing I could not stop reading it It was well written extremely informative I learned a great deal of how the Russians treated people from a country which they took over We followed a young girl and her family , taken to Siberia and how badly they were treated I had no idea and I remember this years Between Shades of Gray took my breath away This novel portrays the story of Lina, a young girl living in Lithuania in 1941 Her story immediately begins the night she is taken away I started reading this novel in the car right after I got it, but I was only planning to read a few pages after all, I was already reading another book But little did I know Since the beginning of the story is so captivating, I could not put it down I read the majority of it that night, and only when I was forced to go to bed did I put it down I immediately finished it the next day.
Honestly, I didn t even know that this had happened in history, and it makes me feel ignorant Because if so many people suffered this much and this tragically, I think everyone should know about it.
But horrific plot aside, let s look at the writing Sepetys does a magical job of creating something beautiful out of something ter This book reminded me of The Diary of Anne Frank and I couldn t put it down in 3 days History teaches us the harsh reality of deportations during WW2 Reading other books with the same subject, I could find a lot of similarities, wheather deported people were from Moldova, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, etc The beauty of this book comes from the main character, a 15 years old girl who survived those times through the eyes of her drawings.
