Î Read ï Erika's Story by Ruth Vander Zee É This story is both uplifting and heartbreaking It is a true story about a jewish baby who was thrown from the train en route to a concentration camp She was raised by a German family and despite not knowing literally anything about her history has grown up happy and has children and grandchildren of her own now I have got to read this book to my class in a few weeks but at the moment I can t actually read it out loud without crying The illustrations are superb and are mainly monochrome with a few touches of colour which is very effective A must for older children who are studying WW2.
Amazing illustrations by Roberto Innocenti I heard about a book from a good friend of mine She d been talking about a book like it was a golden one Later on I discovered that this book was recommended by her teacher, who wanted to illustrate her the background of the book.
I was curious what was this book so special about so I ordered it myself, too.
I got it about a week after I placed my order and first I just flipped through the pages quickly Then I took a closer look at the illustrations in the book and somehow the book came alive and the story, which was true, got another meaning.
It s a story about staying alive in the circumstances where being alive was a privilege in a time of the Holocaust.
I am a teacher and I bought this book after seeing it being used on a documentary I have used it lots of times the text is excellent and the images are very appropriate I have spent a whole half term using this as a main teaching focus.
I would deifinitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in or looking into the holocaust in detail.
As I mentioned in the title A Truly Outstanding Story This story is both uplifting and heartbreaking It is a true story about a jewish baby who was thrown from the train en route to a concentration camp She was raised by a German family and despite not knowing literally anything about her history has grown up happy and has children and grandchildren of her own now I have got to read this book to my class in a few weeks but at the moment I can t actually read it out loud without crying The illustrations are superb and are mainly monochrome with a few touches of colour which is very effective A must for older children who are studying WW2.

I used this story with my Year 6 class and they really connected with the story Useful to show children the real life stories of the war.
It is the winter of 1944 In Nazi occupied Europe, a Jewish couple realize their fate is sealed and make a heart rending decision so that their infant daughter might live Ruth Vander Zee s elegant narration and Roberto Innocenti s searing and beautiful illustrations combine to capture the fear, love, and sadness of a Holocaust survivor s story.
