Download Epub Format ☆ Shadow on the Highway (Highway Trilogy Book 1) PDF by ë Deborah Swift Its a 5 from me It wasn t until I started looking through the reviews after I had finished the book and had made my mind up about it that I even realised it was aimed at the Young Adult market I still wouldn t put it in that category as it is just as suitable for older people But about the book It was a brave and unusual decision to make the narrator a deaf serving girl one who can lip read and observe people and for my mind it definitely paid off Abigail Chaplin Abi knows her place despite the way she is treated and spoken to by superior characters She also silently carries her own guilt about events that led to her deafness The main character is Katherine Fanshaw and here Ms Swift has delivered a lesson in characterisation She is or was rich but has no control over her own affairs, being ruled by her brutish stepfather, her chinless but no less abhorrent husband and, later This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review Helen Hollickfounder DDRevs It wasn t until I started looking through the reviews that I realised this was aimed at the Young Adult market it is just as suitable for older readers.
I got this as a freebie via Kindle when it first came out As I already had one of Deborah Swift s paperbacks on my tbr shelf I snapped it up.
The English civil war is something I have always been interested in, especially as it was a tumultuous time of our country s history I really enjoyed this book, I believe it is part of a planned trilogy I shall be reading the others The book has an authentic, well researched feel to it The author s love of history comes through her writing.
The story is about Abigal Chaplin, a young deaf girl who goes into the service of the Lady Katherine Fanshawe Lady Katherine is only a few years older than Abigail and trapped in a loveless marriage and trapped in an even miserable life Abigail comes from a family whose fortunes have fallen in which she partly blames herself for and having come fro If I was choosing an historical novel for a teenager this would be top of my list I studied this period, taught it, and since I was a young girl I have enjoyed reading books set during The English Civil War, First of all, Shadow on the Highway is beautifully written Every sentence is honed Secondly, the characterisation in this novel is excellent and finally the narrative fast paced and absolutely engaging Third, the period is superbly recreated so that the history is absorbed into a wonderful adventure Fortunately for readers this is the first novel in a trilogy I do want it to continue and soon.

every word was a page turner and the excitement it provoked in me was tingling i had never heard of this author but now can t wait to read the rest of her books The only negative was that i would like to have known about Abi and Ralphs past as they are referred to in the book as being well off at some point However this may become evident in following books brilliant read I picked this up almost by accident I don t read many historicals and really loved it The evocation of period was excellent without being overdone Being stuck in the middle of a Referendum debate in Scotland right now, it was particularly easy to see how certain issues can divide not only the country but families as well Chillingly evocative I loved the fact that the heroine was deaf what challenges she faced and how well Ms Swift portrayed them A great read.

I wasn t aware that this was a book for young adults older children I would have read a book like this when I was 13 and I am now 60 It s a good tale with seemingly accurate historical information But I do think the description needs to tell potential readers purchasers that it is not an adult tale.
It took me a little while to get into this story but when I did I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next I look forward to reading the follow up book.
Deborah Swift s first book for young adults does not disappoint As always in her books the relationship between the main characters, particularly between servant and mistress, is complicated and fascinating The period is brought to life and the story develops with the protagonists I recommed it to younger and older adults alike and look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.
